ISTANBUL

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met Brazilian President Lula da Silva on Saturday on the margins of a G20 summit in Rio to discuss global collaboration on climate action and multilateral reforms, according to UN News.

The leaders discussed strengthening multilateralism, reforming international financial structures and implementing urgent climate measures, it said.

Both stressed the need for enhanced commitments to ensure the success of COP29 and COP30 and global targets align with limiting warming to 1.5 C.

Guterres praised Brazil’s contributions to global priorities, while Lula proposed a Social G20 to include civil society and social movements at future summits.

Brazil will host the G20 summit in Rio on Nov. 18 – 19, under the theme: “Construction of a just world and a sustainable planet,” bringing together leaders from 19 major economies, the EU and the African Union.
