KAMPALA, Uganda
The United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) has suspended flights in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s eastern North Kivu and Ituri provinces due to insecurity.
In a statement, the World Food Program (WFP) said that the suspension of flights between Goma and the cities of Beni and Bunia followed Friday’s attack on one of the helicopters operated by UNHAS.
It said the flights are also suspended in several other towns.
On Friday, unidentified militants opened fire on the helicopter 10 minutes before its landing in Goma city, according to WFP.
It said that all 10 passengers and crew were unharmed.
Eastern DR Congo is plagued by insecurity, with many armed groups operating in the region.
