KHARTOUM, Sudan
The UN migration agency said Thursday that at least 285 people were newly displaced over a two-day period from Kadugli city and Al-Kuwaik town in Sudan’s South Kordofan state due to deteriorating security conditions.
In a statement, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said its teams documented the displacement of 85 people from Kadugli, the state capital, as a result of insecurity and military operations on Jan. 27 and 28.
The agency added that a further 200 people were displaced on Wednesday from Al-Kuwaik town in the Eastern Rural locality of South Kordofan, also citing insecurity as the main driver.
According to the IOM, the displaced families moved to White Nile state in southern Sudan and to Kelik locality in neighboring West Kordofan state.
The organization warned that the situation in the area remains “tense and volatile,” noting that it continues to closely monitor developments.
Earlier this week, the UN migration agency said the number of people displaced from the Kordofan region had risen to 88,316 in just over two months due to ongoing fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been locked in a war that regional and international mediations have failed to end. The conflict has killed thousands of people and displaced millions.
