KYIV, Ukraine: Ukraine Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov has announced that the first delivery of NASAMS air defense systems, which will “significantly strengthen” the country’s armed forces, has been received.

Last month, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said that after a devastating missile barrage from Russia, the U.S. was accelerating the shipment of NASAMS systems to Ukraine.

“These weapons will significantly strengthen the #UAarmy and will make our skies safer,” Reznikov wrote on the Telegram messaging app, thanking Norway, Spain and the U.S. for providing the sophisticated weapons.

After a series of Russian air strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the leaders of the Group of Seven(G7) nations for more help with air defense last week.

“We must ensure full protection of the Ukrainian sky and will continue to do everything possible and impossible for this,” Zelensky said.

In a report released this week, the Royal United Services Institute, a London-based defense think tank, said that Ukraine needed modern Western equipment and ammunition to defend itself from missile and drone attacks.

“The West must avoid complacency about the need to urgently bolster Ukrainian air-defense capacity,” the Royal United Services Institute stated.
