Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday said he spoke with Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, discussing military aid, sanctions on Russia, and bilateral cooperation in defense production.

In a statement on Telegram, Zelenskyy congratulated Carney on assuming office and thanked Canada for its continued support. “I … thanked Canada for its assistance, particularly for the defense packages and support of our energy sector,” he said.

He underscored the need for increased pressure, including “all-out sanctions” on Russia for a “just and lasting peace.”

“We also discussed the humanitarian aspect of security guarantees for Ukraine. This includes rebuilding our country and supporting the economy after the war ends. We will work on this,” Zelenskyy added.

The two leaders addressed Ukraine’s role on Canada’s G7 presidency agenda, emphasizing closer cooperation.

Zelenskyy also highlighted growing defense ties, saying Canada is interested in military-industrial collaboration.

“Throughout this war, we have gained significant experience in the production of EW (electronic warfare) systems, long-range missiles, and drones. Ukraine is ready for joint production,” he said.

Canada has supported the US-backed proposal for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. Russia has agreed to the idea in principle, but has called for addressing the root causes of the conflict.
