Every year from 23 to 30 September, the European Week of Sport promotes more active, healthier lifestyles to millions of people in Europe and beyond; and this year, the Embassy of the Czech Republic Abuja in collaboration with the European Union celebrated this event on Friday 30 September 2022, at the Embassy of Brazil Abuja

The night was also Czech Presidency gala evening, to celebrate the assumption of the Czech Republic Presidency of the European Union Council, with attendance of members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, entrepreneurs, the press and selected private schools in Abuja Nigeria.

In his welcome of diplomats and guests to the Brazilian Embassy, H. E. Ambassador Francisco Soares Luz, extolled the deep and lasting relationship between Brazil and the Czech Republic and said it was an honour to host the 2022 European Union Week of Sport.

As host of the event, H. E. Zdenek Krejci, the Ambassador of Czech Republic to Nigeria, buttressed the importance of the European Union Week of Sport, as an annual event that was opened in Brussels in 2015, with the aims of promoting sport and physical activity across Europe at national, regional and local levels.

The event provided a robust opportunity for the Czech Republic to celebrate her citizen Emil Zatopek, recognized as one of the greatest runners of all time, and the only runner to win the 5,000m, 10,000m and the marathon at the same Olympic Games, by screening a film depicting his life and accomplishments to invited guests.

Great variety and spice was added to this event, as the Czech Embassy in partnership with Bata (the foot wear company), presented awards and recognitions to competition winners of private schools in Abuja. Schools in attendance were; Doveland High School, Premier Academy, The Centagon International School, Springhill British School, Noble Hall Leadership Academy for Girls, Glisten International Academy, Nigerian Tulip International Colleges, The Regent School, Regina Pacis Girls Secondary School and Divine Mercy School. The winners from these schools were given free gift vouchers, certificates of achievement and other items sponsored by Bata Nigeria.

The event ended on a high note with a dinner.
