The police command in Oyo State said two persons lost their lives while others sustained varying injuries in a tragic road accident which occurred on Saturday at Soka Junction, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The command’s spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, in a statement on Sunday, said the incident occurred at about 10:10 p.m.

The police spokesman said preliminary findings revealed that the fatal accident was caused by a white HOWO truck driven by one Abdullahi Bashiru, who reportedly lost control of the vehicle.

The police said the driver was speeding and driving recklessly, ramming into pedestrians and multiple vehicles, including a Toyota Venza and a BMW.

“The Oyo State Police Command is aware of a tragic multiple motor/pedestrian accident that occurred at Soka Junction, Ibadan, along the Ibadan–Lagos Expressway on 4th April 2026 at about 10:10 p.m.,” the statement said.

“The Command regrets to confirm that two (2) persons lost their lives, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The accident also involved and damaged multiple vehicles, including a Toyota Venza and a BMW, among others,” it stated.

The spokesman said the state Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, commiserated with the families of the victims and wished those injured in the incident a quick recovery.

Mr Olayinka said the command has commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure justice where necessary.

The police command also urged members of the public, particularly motorists, to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and avoid excessive speed.
