The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University has directed that academic activities should resume, following the expiration of a three-week mid-semester break earlier declared by the institution.

An internal memorandum addressed to all faculty deans by the institution’s principal assistant registrar, Aronkola I.B, on Sunday, stated that the resumption followed deliberation by the school’s senate during a meeting held on Thursday.

The memo noted that the newly introduced transportation system, which led to students’ demonstration and a mid-semester break directive, had been “sufficiently addressed”.

“Senate, among other things, considered the issue of resumption of students from three weeks’ mid-semester break,” the memo stated. “It (the senate) also noted the information that all matters that emanated from the situation had been sufficiently addressed.”

According to the memo, the senate noted that the mid-semester holiday would end on Tuesday, May 19 and agreed that academic activities should resume on the same date.

The management called on all faculty deans in the institution to note the senate’s decision and take further necessary actions.

On Tuesday April 28, the OAU management directed students to embark on a three-week mid-semester break, following students’ protest over transportation inconvenience in the institution.

A statement by the school’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, at the time, stated that the decision became imperative following a series of protests by the student populace over the newly introduced transportation system.
