NAIROBI

Energy ministers from Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Austria and Germany signed the Algiers Ministerial Declaration on Thursday on the SoutH2 Corridor project to transport green hydrogen from Algeria to Europe.

The declaration was signed following the second ministerial meeting of the five partner countries in the Algerian capital.

The project will transport 4 million tons of green hydrogen annually from Algeria to Austria, Germany and Italy along a roughly 3,000-kilometer *1,864-mile) route, equivalent to about 10% of Europe’s projected demand for the clean fuel by 2040.

The project is expected to use existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure, which would be upgraded and adapted for hydrogen transportation.

Work on the project began in October 2024 in Oran, where Algeria’s Sonatrach and Sonelgaz signed a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s VNG, Italy’s Snam and SeaCorridor and Austria’s VERBUND Green Hydrogen to conduct studies on the feasibility and profitability of an integrated project to produce green hydrogen in Algeria and export it to Europe.

The first ministerial meeting was held in Rome in January 2025 and resulted in the signing of a declaration of political intent on the strategic project, with the parties agreeing to strengthen cooperation through a five-country working group.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune also received the energy ministers of Austria, Italy, Germany and Tunisia following Thursday’s meeting.
