At least five people were killed following a shooting at a youth centre in Stade, northern Germany, on Monday.
Local police confirmed that two persons had been arrested, adding that one of them was believed to be the alleged shooter.
The motive for the shooting, however, remained unclear.
“Homicides involving multiple victims occurred at a youth welfare facility. Five people were fatally injured, and additional individuals sustained injuries,” the statement said.
The police explained that a major operation was underway on Dankersstrasse, a street south of the city centre, and urged people to avoid the area and follow the instructions of the emergency services.
Stade is located about 40km from Hamburg and has a population of about 500,000 people.
