Governor Monday Okpebholo has condemned the killing of a yet-to-be-identified student by gunmen at the main gate of the University of Benin on Sunday.

Mr Okpebholo, in a statement on Monday, described the violent killing of the undergraduate as an affront to human dignity and a threat to public safety.

The governor said the killing was unacceptable and extended condolences to the deceased’s family and associates.

He disclosed that the police had commenced investigations, while security agencies were working round the clock to apprehend those responsible.

Mr Okpebholo assured the public that the case would not be swept under the carpet, vowing that the perpetrators would be identified and brought to justice.

He reiterated his administration’s resolve to stamp out cultism through sustained security operations, collaboration with security agencies, community engagement and rehabilitation programmes for vulnerable youths.

The governor stressed that the state would not serve as a haven for criminals and urged residents to provide useful information to security agencies.

He added that all information provided would be kept strictly confidential.
