The Centre for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN) has urged motorists in Akwa Ibom to comply with the directive to obtain third-party insurance certificates.

This is contained in a statement by the director, Franklyn Isong and the secretary, Christopher Ekpo, which was made available to journalists in Uyo on Wednesday.

CHRAN commended the police command in Akwa Ibom for taking a bold and civil step towards enforcing the third-party insurance policy.

The group said that the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, had demonstrated his respect for human rights through the civility being shown by personnel on enforcement duty.

“He is leading the third-party insurance enforcement in the state; we have not seen any case of human rights violations so far.

“We commend him and his team for being very professional in enforcing the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

“Motorists in the state should obtain the third-party insurance cover and other necessary vehicle documents, this is how to operate in a decent society,” the statement read in parts.

CHRAN further said that it would support the enforcement process through public awareness and sensitisation programmes.

“As part of our efforts to collaborate with the police, CHRAN has set up a five-member committee to carry out more awareness campaigns across the state to ensure compliance.

“The committee will also interface with critical stakeholders in the state to ensure human rights protection while the directive is being enforced,” the group said.
