John Shing-Wan Leung, 78, jailed for life, deprived of political rights

ISTANBUL

A US passport holder was sentenced to life over espionage by a Chinese court on Monday, state media reported.

The Suzhou Intermediate People’s Court in southeastern Jiangsu province pronounced that John Shing-Wan Leung, 78, “has been convicted of espionage and sentenced to life imprisonment, deprivation of political rights for life and confiscation of personal property of 500,000 yuan ($71,700).”

Born in 1945, Leung holds a permanent identity card in Hong Kong, a mainland travel permit, Macao residency, and a US passport, the Chinese daily Global Times reported.

He was arrested in April 2021.
