The Tinubu Media Volunteers has commended the annual enrolment of nurses in Nigeria from 28,000 students two years ago to the current 115,000 students.

This milestone, according to the group, was due to the deliberate policy of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to boost the country’s healthcare sector by training more medical personnel, including nurses and doctors.

Chairman of TMV, Chukwudi Enekwechi, in a statement on Saturday, said that the increased enrollment was in line with the federal government’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences (STEM) initiative.

He said, “We believe that this is a welcome development bearing in mind that nurses’ skills would serve a useful purpose for Nigeria. First, it will enable Nigerian nurses to travel to the various countries where their services will be needed. This would attract more diaspora remittances to Nigeria, as well as open job opportunities for Nigerian nurses within and outside the country. Furthermore, the nurses’ enrolment comes with the acquisition of necessary skills that are in high demand abroad.’’

According to TMV, with the huge enrolment of nurses, Nigeria can emulate India which remitted about $129 billion as diaspora remittances in 2024 alone, and human capital and medical personnel account for a substantial part of the remittances.

The group is hopeful that this new development would position Nigeria to begin to outsource human capital to the world including Europe and America.
