KIGALI, Rwanda

An organized jailbreak of more than 130 inmates from Chad’s high-security prison of Mongo left at least four people dead and three others injured, including a provincial governor, authorities said Saturday.

The escape happened overnight Friday to Saturday in the Guera province, in the city of Mongo, about 406 kilometers (252 miles) east of N’Djamena, capital of the Central African country.

Hassan Soulyeman, a provincial official, told reporters that the mass escape was facilitated by accomplices of inmates on the outside.

He said weapons were smuggled into the prison with the complicity of certain elements, facilitating a coordinated assault, and more than 130 inmates managed to escape amid a shootout.

The injured included Guera’s provincial governor, Abdoulaye Ibrahim Siam, who was shot, along with his bodyguards, he said.

Media reports indicated Public Security Minister Ahmat Akhabach has visited Mongo to assess the situation.
