The Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA) has urged ward heads and residents to remain vigilant and report any illegal or unauthorised building construction in their communities.

The Acting Managing Director of KNUPDA, Nura Ma’aude, stated this in a statement signed by the authority’s public relations officer, Bahijja Malam-Kabara, on Tuesday in Kano.

Mr Ma’aude said an unauthorised underground structure was discovered during the authority’s routine monitoring of building development approvals in Mariri, Tarauni Local Government Area.

He said the excavation was between 20 and 40 feet deep and was carried out without the required approval from the authority.

“We have sealed the property and directed the owner to report to KNUPDA for investigation and further regulatory action.

“The authority remains committed to enforcing building regulations across the state, and legal action will be taken against developers or individuals undertaking construction without the necessary approvals,” he said.

Mr Ma’aude appealed to ward heads and the general public to support the authority’s efforts by reporting any suspicious or unauthorised construction activities in their neighbourhoods.

According to him, community participation is vital to ensuring public safety, promoting orderly urban development, and preventing avoidable disasters.

The acting managing director added that the state government remained committed to protecting lives and property through strict enforcement of urban planning regulations.

He commended the dedication and professionalism of KNUPDA staff in carrying out their responsibilities across the state.
