On Saturday, Mekon Football Club of Umunze emerged winners of the season six edition of the Anambra Independent Football League (AIFL).

Mekon FC were crowned champions after an emphatic 3-0 win against Bubendorf FC of Ada-Anj in a game decided at the Awka Township Stadium.

Odinka Christopher scored for them in the 10th and 35th minutes, while Kelechi Nebedum completed the rout with a 39th-minute strike.

Peace FC of Awka walloped Obeledu United 4-1 to finish second on the competition’s final table.

In another game played in the competition on Saturday, Hopeland FC of Nnewi thrashed Cardinal Arinze FC of Onitsha 3-0.

Chukwuemeka Afusi, the proprietor of Mekon FC, later told journalists the AIFL was a huge intervention in football development in Anambra and the entire country.

He commended his players for their fighting spirit and for achieving the rare feat of winning the state amateur league title.

Afusi, also the managing director of Mekon Sports Wear, promised to provide more support for the team.

”I am also ready to go into partnership with the AIFL for the season seven edition of this competition,” he said.

Obinna Dike, chairman of AIFL, thanked God for completing the season six edition of the competition, which had run consistently since 2017. He described football administration in Nigeria as a herculean task.

Dike thanked Paulinus Ezeokafor, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, for his spiritual, moral and financial support. He said this had contributed largely to the competition’s success.

Dike congratulated members of AIFL management, club owners and players for their various roles and assured them that the next edition of the competition would be bigger and better.

The AIFL is an independent football league for amateur clubs within and outside Anambra.
