Lionel Messi of Argentina on Monday made history as he scored against Austria, breaking the World Cup goalscoring record.

Messi, 38, gave Argentina the lead with a brilliant strike to bring his World Cup goal tally to 17, breaking the all-time men’s World Cup scoring record.

Though he missed the chance to score from the spot, Messi buried a shot into the net in the 38th minute to set a new World Cup goalscoring record.

In a post on X, FIFA lauded the Argentine football talisman’s achievement, posting his photos.

“History is made. Lionel Messi is the all-time top goalscorer in @FIFAWorldCup history!” FIFA said.

Messi made his first World Cup appearance in 2006. Since then, he has featured in the 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026 editions of the tournament.
