MOSCOW
Moscow announced on Friday that Washington has approved the nomination of Alexander Darchiev, director of the North Atlantic Department at the Foreign Ministry, as Russia’s ambassador to the US.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that during consultations between the Russian and US delegations in Istanbul on Thursday regarding the normalization of diplomatic missions, the American side formally approved his appointment.
Darchiev is expected to assume charge soon, the ministry added.
Last October, President Vladimir Putin relieved Anatoly Antonov of his role as ambassador to the US, without naming a replacement. Antonov, 69, had held the position since 2017.
Antonov’s departure came at a time when relations between the two countries were at their lowest point in recent years.
