Myanmar produced Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, a former leader and Nobel Laureate incarcerated since 2021, to meet a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross amid heightened speculation that Ms Aung San Suu Kyi’s health is deteriorating.
The regime provided an undated photo showing Ms Aung San Suu Kyi shaking hands with a Red Cross representative.
The concerns came to a head this year after her son Kim Aris demanded proof of life, renewing worries about her health.
The ICRC confirmed in a statement that its representative met with the former Myanmar leader.
“In line with the ICRC’s working methods, detention visits provide people deprived of liberty with the opportunity to exchange news with their families,” the statement said. “As is customary in the ICRC’s detention work, observations and recommendations related to the visit are shared exclusively and confidentially with the detaining authorities.”
Since putschists overthrew Ms Aung San Suu Kyi in a coup five years ago, she has been kept behind bars to diminish her political influence and popularity.
In a closed-door trial, Ms Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to 27 years’ imprisonment on numerous charges, including corruption, violations of COVID-19 restrictions and incitement against the military.
