The Pro-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, has called on the government to improve the welfare of teachers to promote interest in the profession.
Mr Oyeweso made the call in Ile-Ife on Saturday at a royal reception and book launch hosted in his honour by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
The emeritus professor of History lamented the poor remuneration and conditions of service of teachers compared to their counterparts in other professions.
He urged the Federal Government to provide a conducive environment for teachers to thrive to bring the best out of them and the students.
In his remarks, Oba Ogunwusi commended Mr Oyeweso’s passion and efforts in preserving Yoruba history and cultural heritage.
The titles of the four books authored by Mr Oyeweso are “Expanding the Pantheon of Yoruba Gurus in Nigeria; Perspectives on Higher Education & Good Government in Nigeria; Ede Mapo Arogun: Celebrating A City Its History Monarchy and People; and Eminent Yoruba Muslims.
The event was attended by prominent dignitaries including a former Editor-in-Chief of Vanguard newspaper, Gbenga Adefaye; and a former deputy governor of Osun State, Titi-Laoye Ponle and her husband.
Others include a former Ekiti First Lady, Erelu Bisi Fayemi; Funsho Akande; Head of Political Science, University of Ibadan; Prof. Dhikrullah Yagboyaju, Vice-Chancellor, Fountain University, Osogbo, Prof. Olayinka Karim, among others.
