As the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child, 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians and government authorities to prioritise the empowerment and education of the girl child, describing it as a vital investment in the country’s future.

In a statement on his X handle on Saturday titled “Empowering the Girl Child: Securing Our Common Future,” Obi expressed concern over the alarming number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, noting that more than 29 million children are currently out of school, with girls making up the majority.

He lamented that the trend reflects a national failure to protect the dreams and future of young girls, stressing that “a society that neglects its girls undermines its own progress and weakens the foundations of its future.”

Obi emphasised that educating and empowering girls yields far-reaching benefits for families, communities, and the nation at large.

“The empowerment of girls and women is the smartest investment any country can make. An educated girl becomes a pillar of stability in her family, a force for development in her community, and a beacon of hope for the nation,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor urged deliberate national action to ensure every girl has access to education, healthcare, and protection from abuse and domestic violence.

He added that Nigeria’s strength and progress will ultimately be measured by how well it nurtures and supports the dreams of its young girls.

“When we educate a girl, we elevate a family; when we empower a girl, we transform a nation,” Obi stated.

He concluded by calling on all Nigerians to renew their commitment to building a society where every girl can “dream freely, learn confidently, and contribute meaningfully to our shared destiny.”
