Out of 1,390 arrested, police only got 31 people convicted in one year

The police command in Cross River says it charged no fewer than 412 cases to courts between January and December 2025.

The command’s spokesman, Sunday Eitokpah, disclosed this on Wednesday.

Mr Eitokpah also said that within the period under review, the command secured 31 convictions, while 26 cases were closed. He further disclosed that the command made a total of 1,390 arrests from 1,142 cases recorded within the period.

Mr Eitokpah listed theft and other forms of stealing as the most prevalent offences, with 444 cases. He added that 493 arrests were made in connection with these crimes, resulting in 175 charged to court, 24 convictions secured, nine cases closed and 236 pending.

“This is followed by offences against persons, assault, and properties. Offence against persons had 156 cases recorded, with 230 arrests made, 36 charged to court, seven closed and 113 pending.

“For assault, 109 cases were reported and 142 arrests made within the period under review, with two convictions secured from the 25 charged to court, eight closed and 74 still pending.

“For the offence against properties, the command recorded 83 cases, 87 arrests, two convictions from the 28 charged to court, and 53 pending,” he explained.

The spokesman also said that there were 63 recorded cases of murder, 92 arrests, 34 charged to court, and 29 pending.

“The command also had 61 recorded rape cases, with 96 arrests, two convictions from the 34 charged to court, and 25 pending.

“False pretence/cheating had 62 recorded cases, 67 arrests, 22 charged to court and 40 pending.

“Meanwhile, the command recorded just two cases of kidnapping within the period under review,” he said.
