Over 1,300 people, including children and women, were killed in three months under President Bola Tinubu, Amnesty International said.
The human rights organisation, in a statement on Friday, highlighted a series of killings by gunmen in Plateau State after Mr Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.
“In Plateau State, from December 2023 to February 2024, at least 1,336 people were killed. Of those killed, 533 were women, 263 were children, and 540 were men,” Amnesty International said. “Over 29,554 people were displaced, out of which 13,093 were children, while 16,461 were women.”
According to Amnesty International, in April 2025, gunmen killed at least 51 people in some villages of the Bassa local government.
Amnesty International’s statement raising the alarm on the lingering humanitarian crisis in Plateau State caused by gunmen comes against the backdrop of a gunmen attack on communities in Mangu LGA that claimed 15 lives on Monday.
The rights organisation said, “Apart from slaughtering everyone they came across, the gunmen also razed homes and other properties.”
Citing witnesses, Amnesty International said, “The attack forced over 200 people to flee their homes.
“The Monday evening attack is yet another indication of how vulnerable rural communities of Plateau are to incessant attacks that always entirely destroy the affected communities.”
