Security operation conducted in Lower Shabelle region, says intelligence and security agency
MOGADISHU, Somalia
More than 20 al-Shabaab terrorists, including “ringleaders,” were killed in a security operation in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region, the country’s intelligence and security agency said on Friday.
The operation was conducted with the support of Somalia’s international security partners, according to a statement issued by the agency.
The statement said that more terrorists on the run are being chased.
The operation came two days after the terrorist group attacked a Somali military base in the central state of Galmudug.
The group claimed that it killed over 50 soldiers, including commanders, but the Somali military said the army repulsed the attack and inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorist group.
The al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab terrorist group has been fighting against the Somali government and the African Union mission since 2007.
