The police have launched an investigation into the alleged death of Oluwole Oluwaseun, a final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Mr Oluwaseun allegedly died by suicide.

In a statement on Wednesday, the university’s spokesman, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the institution received information on Tuesday at about 1:30 p.m. about an emergency involving the student at an apartment in Damico Area, Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.

“The Nigerian police were immediately contacted, and officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined the university’s security personnel at the scene. The student was subsequently conveyed to the University Health Centre, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor,” it said. “The police have commenced investigation into the circumstances of the incident.”

According to the statement, the university also notified the appropriate student affairs authorities for follow-up, particularly regarding the welfare and support of affected students.

The institution’s vice-chancellor, Adebayo Simeon Bamire, extended the management’s heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and colleagues of the deceased at this difficult moment.

The university urged members of its community to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information or speculation about the circumstances of the death, as the investigation is ongoing.

“The university further encourages any student experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help promptly from trusted persons and the appropriate university support structures,” the statement added.
