JOHANNESBURG

South African authorities said Friday they will deport 71-year-old Janusz Walus, a white supremacist who has served three decades in prison for the 1993 killing of anti-apartheid leader Chris Hani.

Walus, a Polish immigrant who acquired South African citizenship, gunned down Hani outside his home in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg in April 1993.

The assassination is said to have nearly thrown South Africa into a civil war barely a year into its transition from apartheid to democratic rule.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni told a media briefing on Friday that Walus would be sent back to Poland today.

Two years ago, the Constitutional Court ordered the release of Walus, on parole.

Walus has completed serving his two years under community corrections in South Africa in line with parole rules.

Hani was the leader of the South African Communist Party, a close partner of the African National Congress, the country’s largest party.

There was outrage from Hani’s supporter’s, family and party since the court ordered Walus’ release.
