President Bola Tinubu congratulated former military dictator Ibrahim Babangida on his 85th birthday.

The former dictator truncated the transition to civil rule when he annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was reported to have been won by MKO Abiola.

On Monday, however, Mr Tinubu said Mr Babangida, who came to power in a palace coup in 1985, impacted Nigeria in significant ways, leaving enduring marks on the country’s political, economic and geographical landscape.

“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Mr Tinubu claimed.

He said Mr Babangida expanded Nigeria’s economy, established enduring infrastructure and created agencies and institutions that continued to serve the national interest, according to a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

“But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today,” the president reasoned.

Mr Tinubu said Mr Babangida’s name and legacy would remain indelible in Nigeria’s history because of his contributions to national development. The president also highlighted he called Mr Babangida’s continued contributions to national discourse.

“Even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation. His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” he said.

The president wished the former military dictator continued good health, strength and many more years of service to the nation.
