Aformer governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, has called for more commitment from the government toward ending banditry in the country to achieve national cohesion and development.

Mr Bafarawa said curbing banditry would also enhance food security for the country.

While fielding questions from reporters in Sokoto on Sunday, he said focusing on curbing banditry would enable farmers to return to their farms without fear of being attacked.

“As we are all aware, food security is always key to our survival, but at the present state, our people cannot even attempt to go to the farm.

“Let the government put all the necessary measures and strategy toward enhancing security for our farmers to farm,” he urged.

The former governor, also a chieftain in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), further called on the government to invest more in education.

“Our children’s education, most especially at the banditry top areas, has continued to remain a great source of concern.

“The number of out-of-school children is at an alarming rate; as such, the government needs to explore the necessary steps in addressing the menace,” he appealed.
