The U.S. authorities have extradited a Ghanaian government official and former Chief Executive Officer, Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, to Ghana over her involvement in corruption, including embezzelment of $6million.

The U.S. embassy in Accra, Ghana, announced Mrs Tamakloe-Attionu’s extradition to her home country in a statement on X on Tuesday.

“Justice has no borders. The United States has extradited Sedina Tamakloe Attionu to Ghana, following her conviction on 70+ corruption-related charges, including embezzling more than $6M equivalent in Ghanaian taxpayer funds,” the embassy said.

It added, “This is our strong U.S.-Ghana law enforcement partnership in action demonstrating a shared commitment to accountability, and the first extradition from the United States of America to Ghana since 2009.”

Mrs Attionu, who fled to the U.S. after heading MASLOC between 2013 and 2016, was tried and convicted by the Accra High Court in absence in 2014.

Upon being found guilty of charges bordering on corruption and embezzelment, she was handed a 10-year prison sentence.
