The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) on environmental conservation and sustainability initiatives.
This is contained in a statement by the Head, Communications & Corporate Branding, NCF, Olusomi Oduguwa, on Tuesday in Lagos.
The MoU was signed on Monday at the university campus in Ilorin.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILORIN, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, said the partnership underscored the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability and conservation.
Mr Egbewole said the collaboration would strengthen the university’s efforts in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
According to him, the partnership will facilitate the establishment of a five-hectare conservation park within the university campus.
He added that it would promote youth engagement in environmental conservation, registration of UNILORIN students as NCF members, as well as joint research and project development initiatives.
Mr Egbewole said the collaboration would also cover carbon assessment of forests within the university.
“We commend NCF, a critical stakeholder, for this unique partnership that enhances our efforts on environmental conservation and sustainable development.
“We look forward to working with NCF to create a positive impact on our campus and beyond,” he said.
Also speaking, the Director-General of NCF, Dr Joseph Onoja, commended the university for its commitment to conservation efforts.
Mr Onoja said the initiative would strengthen advocacy for nature conservation and provide practical learning opportunities for students.
“Partnerships like this will boost our demonstration efforts, provide a training ground, and serve as a practical learning centre for university students on forest resources management,” he said.
Mr Onoja noted that NCF had over the years partnered with schools, including tertiary institutions, to promote nature conservation through curriculum development and environmental activities.
He added that the establishment of conservation parks in tertiary institutions was a practical approach to advancing environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
