ISTANBUL

Senior US and Iranian officials are expected to hold a high-level meeting in Switzerland later this week as part of ongoing negotiations, French broadcaster BFMTV reported on Saturday, citing a source close to the talks.

The meeting could take place on Thursday or Friday, after the conclusion of the G7 summit, which ends Wednesday.

The broadcaster said the talks would likely be held in Switzerland, possibly in the country’s German-speaking region rather than in Geneva.

Preparations for a direct meeting between an American and an Iranian official were underway, it added.

The broadcaster said it remained unclear whether any agreement would be formally signed or whether the meeting would include a public gesture such as a handshake.

Questions had reportedly been raised over the timing of the negotiations, with indications that progress could be made before or shortly after the G7 summit.

Neither US nor Iranian authorities have publicly confirmed the reported meeting.

The reported talks come amid ongoing Pakistan-mediated negotiations between Iran and the US aimed at ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and reaching a consensus on Iran’s nuclear program.

On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said a memorandum of understanding between the two countries would not be signed on Sunday but could be concluded “in the coming days.”
