Students in Zamfara have called on the state government to urgently restore local scholarships to ease financial pressure on tertiary institution learners.

Nasiru Gamagiwa, national president, Federated Association of Zamfara State Students, said, “Local scholarship remains the major challenge. No day passes without complaints regarding registration from students.”

He praised government support, adding, “We acknowledge efforts in clearing WAEC and NECO backlogs and paying foreign scholarships for studies in India and Cyprus. “The proposal for local scholarship is ready, awaiting the governor’s approval. More students will enrol in tertiary schools once approved.”

Executive secretary of the Scholarship Board, Rashida Liman, said, “Governor Dauda Lawal is passionate about education and committed to the state’s educational development.

“Local scholarship is in the pipeline and will commence soon, giving students reason to smile across the state. We recently sponsored full scholarships to indigenes for computer science and medical courses at a university in Edo.

“The governor is determined to uplift education. Very soon, local scholarship payments within the country will begin without further delay.”
