The Lagos State Government has said that about 400 residents suffering from limb deformity would be treated for free.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr Olusegun Ogboye stated this Monday during a visit to the screening site for the latest batch of beneficiaries at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

He said the corrective surgery was targeted at rehabilitating people especially children with lower limb deformities that affect their normal growth and function.

According to him, the exercise has recorded over 400 potential beneficiaries, who would be screened over a period of two days, during which appropriate medical examinations would be conducted.

He said 80 children would benefit from corrective surgical intervention while others would be offered physiotherapy, nutrition and health education as well as assistive mobility devices.

He said, “The process involves a screening where surgeons examine patients and select those eligible to benefit from the surgery and others that may benefit from assistive devices and other forms of physical rehabilitation.”

The coordinator of the programme, Dr Tolulope Ajomale noted that over 6,000 patients have benefitted from the programme since its inception.

Ajomale said the programme has evolved into a multidisciplinary surgical outreach programme that explores surgical intervention, physiotherapy and assistive mobility devices that improve health outcomes.

The most common limb deformities are bowlegs and knock knees which affect children physically, emotionally and socially if not corrected.
