A U.S.-based Nigerian prison guard Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Oluwayomi Obed Edom Adeola, earlier arrested in possession of prohibited items on the premises of a correctional facility, was allegedly caught with synthetic cannabinoid, commonly known as K2 and methamphetamine.
The Peoples Gazette had previously reported that Mr Adeola was arrested last month by the TDCJ Office of Inspector General before being charged with possessing prohibited items or substances on prison premises. The type of the banned substances was unknown at the time.
The 39-year-old, who started working with the TDCJ in July 2025 until he resigned August this year, was subsequently detained at the Madison County Jail for seven days before he was released after fulfilling terms of his $40,000 bail bond.
Meanwhile, latest information from court documents have now shown that the defendant was reportedly found with eye drops containing synthetic cannabinoid and methamphetamine.
According to reports, Mr Adeola was initially caught during an administrative investigation on August 4 when officials were alleged to have found a suspicious bottle in his belongings with the test of the liquid subsequently returning presumptive positive result for K2.
During interrogation the suspect reportedly acknowledged that the bottle belonged to him but denied the liquid contained narcotics.
Mr Adeola was eventually arrested on August 21 on an outstanding warrant for alleged possession of a prohibited substance or item in a correctional facility while he was visiting to return state-issued properties following his resignation.
The Gazette also gathered that investigators subsequently searched the suspect’s car, where they found a glass pipe containing a substance suspected to be methamphetamine residue, resulting in a second charge.
Under Texas laws, providing or possessing with the intent to provide alcohol, drugs, weapons, cell phones, money, tobacco and certain other items in a correctional facility is illegal.
Punishment for the offence ranges between two and 20 years or a fine up to $10,000 for being caught with alcohol, a controlled substance or a dangerous drug, classified as a second-degree felony.
Other prohibited-item violations are generally classified as third-degree felonies, punishable by two to 10 years in prison as well as $10,000 fine.
It is not the first time that a Nigerian-born prison guard with the TDCJ has been arrested for committing crimes. In May, Ayodele Abiodun Afosi was charged with fleeing the scene of an accident after causing damage.
Also, The Gazette reported in July another that another correctional officer from the department Bashir Oladimeji Lawal was arrested for alleged public intoxication.
