Seven people have been confirmed dead, while two others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle road accident at Kara, along the Ibafo-Lagos corridor in Ogun.

Afolabi Odunsi, the Federal Road Safety Corps’ spokesman in Ogun, confirmed the crash in a statement on Monday.

Mr Odunsi said the crash occurred on Monday at about 12:03 a.m. and involved three vehicles: a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC, a white MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number JJJ920YA.

According to him, nine males were involved in the accident.

“Sadly, seven persons were killed, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Mr Odunsi said.

He attributed the cause of the fatal crash to excessive speed, adding that further investigations were ongoing.

He said FRSC operatives from the FRSC Ibafo Outpost Command received a distress call at about 12:04 a.m. and arrived at the scene five minutes later, at 12:09 a.m.

Mr Odunsi said the Ogun State Ambulance Service evacuated the deceased to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), while the injured were taken to a nearby health facility for medical attention.

He added that the affected vehicles had been handed over to the motor traffic division of the police in Ibafo.

Meanwhile, the sector commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly articulated vehicle drivers, to avoid excessive speed and maintain safe following distances.

Mr Ogunjobi also advised motorists to remain vigilant and exercise extra caution when driving at night, noting that reduced visibility and fatigue could increase the risk of crashes.

“Motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, should avoid excessive speed, maintain safe following distances and remain vigilant at all times,” he said.

He, however, commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
