A shooting at a San Diego mosque in California, United States, on Monday left at least three people dead.

Those killed in the shooting include the mosque guard who tried to prevent the shooters from killing more people.

Authorities said two teens were suspected to be the shooters that disrupted activities at the Islamic Centre on Monday.

According to the police, while at the scene of the shooting, gunshots were heard in a nearby vehicle. Police officer later found two teens dead in the vehicle.

San Diego police chief Scott Wahl said at a press conference that the teens “appear to have died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds”.

Investigations are ongoing to ascertained the motive of the attack. However, a note attributed to the suspected shooters suggested the attack was an “hate crime”, the police said.

“We are grateful to the first responders on the scene working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow guidance from local authorities,” Governor Gavin Newsom said.

The FBI said it “is seeking information on the May 18, 2026, shooting that took place at the Islamic Centre of San Diego”.
